GSOP Live Greece continues to be a very attractive draw, with the online finals on Thursday sending another four players off to Porto Carras for what’s shaping up to be the biggest GSOP Live event ever.

As action wound down in Thursday’s online finals two bwin Team veterans — Baldomer0 and stackemoose — were both in great shape and able to easily cruise to a package, avoiding some of the fireworks that shorter stacks had to suffer through trying to finish in the top four.

The GSOP Greece online finals run every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, so you still have plenty of chances to win a trip of your own to lovely Greece in October.

EPT poker greeceSeason VIII of the PokerStars European Poker Tour has added yet another opportunity for one lucky player to be crowned an EPT Champion and pocket a six-figure prize in 2011, as the EPT announced this week that the tour will be stopping in Greece for the first time in its eight-year history.

PokerStars EPT announces new stop in Greece – The news comes on the heels of the EPT announcement that in January 2012 the tour would be making its first stop in Ireland, and now Greece will join the growing list of countries to have hosted an EPT tournament. The tournament will take place at the Club Hotel Casino Loutraki in Greece, and will run from November 15-20, 2011.

The PokerStars blog quoted Greek pro George “gkap13″ Kapalas as saying, “This is great news that the EPT will visit Greece. I’m truly excited to have such a prestigious tournament taking place in my country. Fellow Greek players have an opportunity to compete in a high calibre tournament with large numbers, and players visiting Greece will enjoy the beautiful Greek landmarks and famous hospitality,”

PokerStars.net is delighted to announce that the European Poker Tour will head to Greece this autumn for the first time ever. The inaugural Greek event will be the fifth stop of EPT Season 8, and is set to take place in the fabulous five-star beach resort of Club Hotel Casino Loutraki, just outside Athens, from November 15-20.

Club Hotel Casino Loutraki (CHCL) will host the debut festival, which is set to include a five-day €4,400 Main Event as well as a wide range of exciting side events. The Loutraki event follows the success of two PokerStars.net-sponsored Greek Poker Cup events – held earlier this year at CHCL – which together attracted more than 500 players from Greece and around the world.

No-Limit Texas Hold’em poker is becoming increasingly popular in Greece and is the fastest growing mind sport in the country. Greek players have already made a significant impact on the European Poker Tour, with Konstantinos Nanos registering a third-place finish at EPT Vienna last season for €265,000. This historic first EPT in Greece will give the local players an opportunity to compete against some of the best players in the country’s first major poker championship title.

Greek pros Konstantinos Alexiou and George “gkap13” Kapalas have also both made EPT final tables in recent years. Kapalas, who has also achieved several World Series of Poker final tables and is leading the Greece All-Time Money List, is one of three PokerStars.net-sponsored “Greek Challengers” who will be competing at EPT Loutraki. The other two are Alexis “J0hnny_Dr@m@” Zervos and Stavros “IDOLLS” Kalfas, who final-tabled the first Greek Poker Cup in March and came third in the EPT6 San Remo €2,000 side event.

The first-ever Epic Poker League Main Event is in the books and Chino Rheem has emerged victorious with the $1,000,000 first-place prize!
When the final table began, six of the absolute best poker players in the world were in alive and in contention for the title. Rheem was joined by Erik Seidel, Jason Mercier, Hasan Habib, Huck Seed and Gavin Smith. Just about 10 hours after the first hand was dealt, all five of them had been eliminated and the only man left standing was Rheem.
The first player to go was Seed, who entered the final table with the least amount of chips. He was followed by Smith in fifth place and then the start-of-the-day chip leader Habib in fourth. When three-handed play began, Rheem was up against Mercier and Seidel. All three were fairly close in chips and had been playing their A-game so far.

Greek poker pro karas made 14 million profit

Greek Poker Pro In light of XBLINK and now XWINK‘s recent assault at the poker tables in which he managed to turn a $4,000 bankroll into $2 million within four days, I felt compelled to recount another tale of gambling heroics from the poker archives.

This story has gone down in Las Vegas folklore as the largest and longest winning streak in gambling history in which a Greek-American gambler by the name of Archie Karas managed to turn $10,000 into $40 million over a two year period between December 1992 and the beginning of 1995.

As Jack Binion once famously said: “When a player can run a toothpick into a lumberyard, it makes him a tough and dangerous player. Archie fits this bill exactly, which is why so many places are scared to take him on.”

Although Archie Karas initially manged to run his $10,000 investment into $3 million playing high stakes pool, sometimes as high as $40,000 a game, in this article I will instead concentrate on Karas’ experiences playing poker.

greek on-line poker legislationGreece became the latest European Union country to legislate e-gaming and on-line poker for its population. Although final dates of implementation haven’t been establishing by the Control Committee, potential operators applying for a license will be allow to advertise across all online and offline media prior to receiving a license.

The Greek parliament passed legislation that would allow EU-licensed operators entering the licensing process in Greece to pay 30% GPT and players a 10% tax on winnings during a six-month transitional period.

Betfair, which in June lodged a complaint with the EC regarding the exclusion of betting exchanges from the Greek law, is lobbying along with other operators to bring the Greek legislation more in line with established European legislation to make it less onerous on players and operators.

EU-based operators will be able to target Greek customers from servers based outside of Greece during the six-month transitional period, it remains unclear as to whether they will be required to locate servers within the territory once licences have been granted.

As the saying goes, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” While the online poker industry has been attempting to weather a serious storm over the last few months, one constant still remains: the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP). The world’s largest online poker room (smaller, but still the largest) has released the schedule for this year’s WCOOP, the tenth annual running of the internet’s most popular poker series.

The festivities start in just over a month with three tournaments on September 4th: a $215 No-Limit Hold’em Six-Max event, the $10,300 No-Limit Hold’em High Roller event, and a standard $215 No-Limit Hold’em event. Like last year, there will be 62 events in total, spread across three weeks. As always, PokerStars will guarantee a minimum prize pool for each event, though because U.S. players are no longer in the fold, the guarantees are lower than in 2010. Last year, there total guaranteed prize pool was $50 million, whereas this year it is “only” $30 million.

As one would expect, most of the tournaments feature No-Limit Hold’em, but there is something for everyone, as varieties of Stud, Omaha, Draw, mixed games, and even Badugi, can be found on the schedule. There are three High Roller events, both with $10,300 buy-ins: the aforementioned No-Limit Hold’em tourney on opening day, a Heads-Up event, and an 8-game tournament. The 2011 WCOOP culminates on September 25th with the $5,200 No-Limit Hold’em Main Event.

Last year’s Main Event fielded 2,443 entrants, creating a $12,215,000 prize pool. Winning the title was “POTTERPOKER,” who became $2,278,097 richer. Across the entire 2010 WCOOP, the total combined prize pools hit $63,157,150.
